Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne Whibley, better known by her birth name of Avril Lavigne, (born September 27, 1984) is a Canadian rock/punk-pop singer, musician and actress. In 2006, Canadian Business Magazine ranked her the seventh most powerful Canadian in Hollywood, and in 2007 she won ninth place in the Jabra Music Contest for the Best Band in the World, based on fan votes from around the world. Avril is French for "April", while la vigne means "the vine" or "the vineyard".

Lavigne's debut album, Let Go, was released in 2002, and went on to sell over 18 million copies worldwide. and was certified six times platinum in the United StatesHer second and third albums, Under My Skin (2004) and The Best Damn Thing (2007), respectively, reached number one on the U.S. Billboard 200. Lavigne has scored five number one songs worldwide to date and a total of eleven top ten hits, including "Complicated", "Sk8er Boi", "I'm with You", "My Happy Ending", and "Girlfriend". She's ranked 50 on VH1's "50 Greatest Women Of The Video Era" show list.

Allison Crowe

Allison Louise Crowe (born November 16, 1981) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and pianist from Nanaimo, British Columbia who now lives in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Crowe records on her own record label, Rubenesque Records Ltd. (formed in 2003 and marketed by Festival Distribution). Her first full-length albums, Secrets and Tidings, were released in 2004, when Crowe was 22. (Tidings was originally released in EP form in 2003.) Allison Crowe: Live at Wood Hall, a double concert album, was released in July 2005. A DVD featuring live-in-the-studio performances of Tidings songs was created for her fan club in November 2005.

Sarah McLachlan

Sarah Ann McLachlan, OC,OBC (born January 28, 1968) is a Grammy-winning Canadian musician, singer and songwriter.

She is known for the emotional sound of her ballads. Some of her most popular songs include "Angel", "Building a Mystery", "Adia", "Possession", "Fallen", "I Will Remember You", and "World on Fire". Her best-selling album to date is Surfacing, for which she won four Juno Awards and two Grammy Awards. In addition to her personal artistic efforts, she founded the Lilith Fair tour, which showcased female musicians in the late 1990s.

The Cirque du Soleil

A new circus

At the beginning of the eighties, some young public entertainers create the high heels Club. Most of them walk on stilts - a habit they got their name from - but there's also fire blowers, jugglers... It happens in Quebec, a region which doesn't have any circus tradition yet. These artists then decide to set up a festival in order to gather everyone of them and to be able to exchange their ideas and their talent. They finally decided to perform every show in the same big top. And in 1984, during the 450th anniversary of the arrival of Jacques Cartier in Canada, the Cirque du Soleil is born. It travels around Quebec while offering a theatralized show which mixes the arts of the circus and the street, and features original music, light effects and costumes. It's slightly different from the traditional circus, as the absence of animals in the shows for instance.

Paul Anka

Paul Albert Anka, OC (born July 30, 1941, in Ottawa, Ontario) is a Canadian singer, songwriter and actor of Lebanese origin. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1990.
Anka recorded his first single, "I Confess," at age 14. In 1957, he went to New York City where he auditioned for Don Costa at ABC, singing a lovestruck verse he had written to a former babysitter. The song, "Diana", brought Anka instant stardom as it rocketed to number one on the charts. "Diana" is one of the best selling 45s in music history. He followed up with four songs that made it into the Top 20 in 1958, making him, at 17, one of the biggest teen idols of the time. He toured Britain and then, with Buddy Holly, he toured Australia.

1960 45 record single of Puppy LoveHis talent went beyond singing, writing Buddy Holly's giant hit, "It Doesn't Matter Anymore," the theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (reworked in 1962 from a song Anka wrote earlier called "Toot Sweet," which had been rewritten with lyrics and recorded by Annette Funicello in 1959 as "It's Really Love"), Tom Jones' biggest hit record, "She's A Lady", and the English lyrics for "My Way," Frank Sinatra's signature song and sung by many well known artists, including Greta Keller and Elvis Presley.

In the 1960s, Anka would begin acting in motion pictures as well as writing songs for them, most notably the theme for the hit movie The Longest Day. From his movie work, he wrote and recorded one of his greatest hit, "Lonely Boy". He then went on to become one of the first pop singers to perform at the Las Vegas casinos. Anka returns to Canada several times a year, regularly playing to sold out crowds at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, Ontario


Anka first became famous as a teen idol in the late 1950s and 1960s, with hits songs like "Diana," "Lonely Boy," and "Put Your Head on My Shoulder." He went on to write such well-known music as the theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Tom Jones' biggest hit, "She's A Lady", and the English lyrics for Frank Sinatra's signature song, "My Way."

Michael Bublé

Bublé was born in Burnaby, British Columbia. Bublé grew up listening to his grandfather's collection of jazz records, and on his website he highlights the importance of his grandfather in encouraging his musical tastes. "My grandfather was really my best friend growing up. He was the one who opened me up to a whole world of music that seemed to have been passed over by my generation. Although I like rock and roll and modern music, the first time my granddad played me the Mills Brothers, something magical happened. The lyrics were so romantic, so real... the way a song should be for me. It was like seeing my future flash before me. I wanted to be a singer and I knew that this was the music that I wanted to sing."

Bublé's grandfather encouraged him to learn the standards that he loved and to enter a talent contest in Vancouver which he won before a later disqualification for being underage. Not discouraged, he won first prize in a Canadian Youth Talent Search at the age of seventeen.

For the next few years, Bublé pursued a musical career with local success in North America for his theatre performances as Elvis in the Red Rock Diner road show and as a star of a musical revue called Forever Swing. He also appeared in an episode of pleth Game in 1996. He recorded three independent albums, one as a present to his grandfather. Bublé received two Genie Award-nominations in 2000 for both songs he wrote for the film Here's to Life starring fellow Canadian Eric McCormack.

Deborah Cox

Deborah Cox (born July 13, 1974 in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian R&B/House singer-songwriter and actress. Her 1998 song "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" was tied with Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" for having the longest-running number one single on Billboard's R&B 100, a record held for nearly eight years until Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You" notched a 15th week at number one in 2006. Cox has achieved eleven number-one hits on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play Chart. Cox has also worked with the German singer Xavier Naidoo since early 2001.Cox entered the music industry as a backup vocalist for Céline Dion, and after signing to Arista Records, released her self-titled debut album in 1995.

The album introduced her to the world and set the stage for 1998's One Wish. The first single from that album, "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here", spent fourteen weeks at #1 on the top R&B 100 charts for the USA, as well as eight consecutive weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her third album, The Morning After, was released in November 2002,under J Records. On February 17, 2004, she made her Broadway debut in the Elton John-Tim Rice musical Aida, returning to recording only to release a dance remix of "Easy As Life" as a single.Cox also has been involved in a number of movies and/or soundtracks. In 2000, she played Niko Rosen in Love Come Down. In 2001, her hit-song "Absolutely Not" was featured in Dr. Dolittle 2. In 2005, in the movie Blood of a Champion she played the role of Sharon, and again in 2005, her voice was featured in the movie Hotel Rwanda in a song entitled "Nobody Cares".Cox has performed her songs at "New Year's Eve" in Los Angeles on December 31, 2005, and subsequently her comeback single "A House Is Not A Home" hit number one on Billboard's Dance/Club Play chart in January 2006. Later in the year, a new song entitled "Definition Of Love" was used in the movie Akeelah and the Bee, but was never released as a single.Between 2005 and 2006 she has recorded a new album called Destination Moon as a tribute to jazz singer Dinah Washington.

Alanis Nadine Morissette (born in Ottawa, 1 June 1974) is a Canadian and naturalized American singer-songwriter, record producer, and occasional actress. She has won twelve Juno Awards and seven Grammy Awards, and has sold more than forty million albums worldwide.Morissette began her career in Canada, and as a teenager recorded two dance-pop albums, Alanis and Now Is the Time, under MCA Records. Her international debut album was the rock-influenced Jagged Little Pill, which is the best-selling debut album by a female artist in the U.S., and the highest selling debut album worldwide. Morissette took up producing duties for her subsequent albums, which include Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, Under Rug Swept and So-Called Chaos.Alanis Morissette was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, to a French-Canadian father, Alan, and Hungarian mother, Georgia. Céline Marie Claudette Dion, OC, OQ, (born March 30, 1968) is a Canadian pop singer and occasional songwriter. Born to a large, impoverished family in Charlemagne, Quebec, Dion became a young star in Francophone Canada after her manager and future husband René Angélil mortgaged his home to finance her first record. She later gained recognition in parts of Europe and Asia after she won both the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival and the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest.In 1990, Dion made her English language debut with the Anglophone album Unison, published by Epic Records. During the 1990s, under the guidance of her husband, she achieved worldwide fame and success with several English and French records, and ended the decade as one of the most successful artists in pop music. After releasing over twenty-five albums during the 1980s and 1990s, Dion announced in 1999 that she was taking a break from entertainment in order to start a family and to focus on her husband/manager, who had been diagnosed with throat cancer. Bryan Adams

Origin Kingston, Ontario, Canada Bryan Adams OC, OBC, (born 5 November 1959) is a Canadian rock singer, guitarist, songwriter and photographer. Some of his best-known albums are Reckless, 18 til I Die, and Waking Up the Neighbours. Adams was awarded the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia for his contribution to popular music and his philanthropic work. He was also inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 1998, and more recently inducted into the Music Hall of Fame at Canada's Juno Awards in April 2006. He has been nominated for three Academy Awards for songwriting, and was recently nominated for his fifth Golden Globe (2007) for his songwriting in the film Bobby. His 16 consecutive weeks spent on top of the UK Singles Charts (for Everything I Do (I Do It For You)) remains a record.
